Oslo wake-up call for nuclear abolition: 127 countries attend conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons

Delegates from 127 countries as well as several UN organisations, the International Red Cross movement, representatives of civil society and media attended the Oslo Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons. The conference was preceded by a Civil Society Forum organised by ICAN (an International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons).

Framework Forum opens in Berlin: Governments and parliamentarians commence work for nuclear-weapons-free world

26 governments, 15 leading parliamentarians and a number of representatives from the United Nations, research institutions and civil society met in Berlin from February 20-22 in the first or a series of Framework Forum meetings. The Framework Forum is an initiative to assist governments to implement the agreement made at the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference that “All States need to make special efforts to establish the necessary framework to achieve and maintain a world without nuclear weapons."

Archive to support a Middle East Zone free of Nuclear Weapons and other WMD

The Basel Peace Office hosts an archive of documents to support the proposal for a Middle East Zone Free from Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, in particular documents of use to civil society in their actions to support the UN Conference on establishing such a zone.

International symposium on humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons

On 17 November the Basel Peace Office hosted an international symposium, held at the University of Basel, on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons.

The facts of the issue are indisputable. There are 19,000 nuclear weapons in the world and enough fissile material to make thousands more. One nuke detonated in a city would be 1000 times worse than the Sep 11 terrorist bombing in New York city. 50 nukes used in a regional war would create climate change consequences that would dwarf the current climate crisis, causing global famine and financial and environmental collapse. The catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons render their use incompatible with international law applicable to war – including international humanitarian law and the laws of peace and security (such as the UN Charter).

389 Members of European Parliament support Global Zero declaration

389 Members of the European Parliament - over half the parliament - have signed a Written Declaration of Support for the Global Zero Action Plan for the phased and verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide introduced by PNND members Tarja Cronberg MEP and Jarosław Wałęsa MEP, along with two other Members of the European Parliament (, Reinhard Bütikofer, and Janusz Zemketo).

Nuclear disarmament promoted at the Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly

On 24 October (United Nations Day), at a plenary of delegations from approximately 150 parliaments, PNND and the Inter Parliamentary Union released a 195 page handbook for parliamentarians in English and French on Supporting Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament.

Delegates from 29 Nations Attend MPI Framework Forum Roundtable

The Middle Powers Initiative organized, with the support of the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations, a roundtable on “Creating the Conditions and Building the Framework for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World” on October 10, 2012. Representatives from 29 countries, plus UN officials and NGOs, attended this preparatory meeting for the Framework Forum that will be held in Berlin, February 2013.

Basel Run for Peace

On 23 September 2012, Alyn Ware ran the Basel Marathon to raise funds and publicity for the Basel Peace Office . With only three weeks training, the run was a bit of a struggle, but Alyn made it the 42 kilometers to the finish line in 4 hours and 20 minutes, in the process raising 1300CHF from small donors from Basel and overseas.

ATOM Project launched at parliamentary assembly in Kazakhstan

The ATOM Project, an exciting new initiative to build global support for nuclear abolition, was launched at a parliamentary assembly in Astana, Kazakhstan on 29 August, the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.

The project, entitled Abolish Testing: Our Mission (ATOM), highlights the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons – particularly the nuclear tests conducted in Kazakhstan that have adversely affected the health and lives of nearly two million people. The images of the survivors, though sometimes difficult to witness, are featured in the campaign in order to raise awareness surrounding the damage nuclear testing can cause.

Nuclear Deterrence: Time to address the sacred cow!

Probably the biggest barrier to making progress on nuclear disarmament and in preventing nuclear proliferation is the continued role of nuclear deterrence in security thinking and doctrines. As long as States believe that nuclear deterrence can protect them from aggression, they will resist or block efforts and initiatives for nuclear disarmament – even if they accept legal obligations or make political commitments otherwise.
