Red Cross and Red Crescent societies mark Hiroshima Day

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today commemorated the 69th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, with a joint statement calling on the 'International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and indeed the entire world, to reflect on the dangers of these weapons and remind ourselves of the need to prohibit and eliminate them once and for all time.'

Basel City President – Can the OSCE reduce the reliance on nuclear weapons and war?

Dr Guy Morin, President of the Basel City Government, opened an international conference in Basel on Friday last week with the question – ‘Can the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) provide a forum and options for resolving current conflicts – such as in the Ukraine, Balkans and Middle East - in peaceful ways? And could this reduce the reliance on military options including nuclear deterrence?'

Basel OSCE speaker initiates nuclear abolition debate in Norwegian parliament

On June 5, the Foreign Minister of Norway and parliamentarians from across the political spectrum engaged in a dynamic debate in the Stortinget (Norwegian Parliament) on the issue of nuclear disarmament initiated by Marit Nybakk, Vice-President of the Parliament and a featured speaker of the Basel OSCE Forum.

From 1966 to 1996 France detonated 193 nuclear weapons under and above the atolls of Moruroa and Fangataufa in French Polynesia.

Basel OSCE Forum speaker on world bike ride for peace

Thore Vestby, who has just confirmed as a speaker for the Basel OSCE Forum on July 4-5, is one of the four cyclists on the World Bike Ride for Peace, which began in Manchester (UK) on March 15 and is going through Europe, Asia and North America.

Basel to host an international forum on cooperative security and a nuclear-weapon-free world.
