An international conference on the human impact of nuclear weapons and power, legal cases on behalf of victims, and protection of future generations.
There is a growing awareness about the catastrophic impact on human health from the nuclear weapons and nuclear power industries, particularly from nuclear weapons testing, uranium mining and nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and Fukushima. Further threats to current and future generations arise from the risks of nuclear-weapons-use and additional nuclear accidents, as well as from the extremely hazardous and long-term nature of radioactive waste.
Law cases to uphold the rights of victims of the nuclear weapons and nuclear power industries have had mixed success. This conference plans to bring together lawyers, medical experts and victims of past, current and proposed lawsuits. Lessons from past cases can assist current and future cases.
Law and medicine seek to not only address past and current harm (redress for human rights violations and treating illness), but also to prevent future harm. The conference will include consideration of legal developments that can strengthen such protection, with a focus on the rights of future generations.
