Physicians for Social Responsibility Switzerland (the Swiss affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) is a co-founder and coalition partner of the Basel Peace Office
The 2025 retreat of PSR/IPPNW Switzerland took place from October 3–6 at Villa Edera in Auressio (Ticino), gathering long-standing members and new collaborators for four days of inspiring presentations, discussions, and reflection in a warm and collegial atmosphere.
Themes and Highlights
The meeting opened with a far-reaching analysis of Switzerland’s energy and climate policy by Roger Nordmann, who outlined the country’s path toward decarbonisation and the key role of renewable energy and European cooperation.
Prof. Pietro Vernazza explored in his talk “Fear as a Driving Force – Between Public Health and Energy Policy” how fear can both mobilise and manipulate societies. The ensuing discussion emphasised PSR/IPPNW’s responsibility to communicate scientifically and compassionately, without resorting to alarmism.
In a moving presentation, Andreas Zumach examined current nuclear risks and the erosion of arms control, warning that “nuclear deterrence does not prevent wars – it enables them.” His call for renewed engagement in disarmament resonated deeply among participants.
Claudio Knüsli presented recent scientific findings on ionising low-dose radiation and its health effects, reaffirming PSR/IPPNW’s long-standing commitment to evidence-based research and public health.
Anne Voigt, Managing Director of Allianz Atomausstieg, shared practical insights on effective political communication for NGOs in an era of media polarisation. Her talk offered valuable strategies for making scientific expertise accessible and emotionally resonant.
Finally, Oliver Abo el Fateh presented his research on Deep-Sea Mining and Legitimacy Narratives, prompting a broader reflection on ethics and environmental responsibility within the energy transition.
Dialogue and Outlook
Throughout the retreat, participants appreciated the spirit of open dialogue and mutual inspiration across generations and disciplines. Shared meals, walks in the autumnal Ticino landscape, and evening discussions strengthened the sense of community and purpose.
The retreat concluded with a strategic outlook for 2026, confirming PSR/IPPNW Switzerland’s continued engagement for peace, disarmament, and environmental justice.
