Participants at the upcoming World Ethic Forum joined with representatives of Basel Peace Office and World Future Council today to 'prevent nuclear war' through a symbolic, inter-active art action in Pontresina, Switzerland.
A special painting of a nuclear missile about to be launched was displayed as part of the Pontresina Street Fair. Passersby were invited to 'stop the nuclear missile firing' by standing on or holding onto the chains cast over the missile. Photos taken of the action from a specific angle make the missile appear to be 3-Dimensional and much more real.
Th action highlights the threat of nuclear war which has increased due to the Ukraine war and other conflicts involving nuclear-armed states. Switzerland has no nuclear weapons. However, Pontresina is just 80 kilometres (by direct line) from Aviano air base in Italy where United States nuclear weapons are deployed. In any European nuclear war, Aviano would be a likely nuclear target.
The action also invited participants and passers by to support nuclear risk reduction and disarmament campaigns, especially those at the United Nations.
The #3DNukeMissile was conceived by Holger Guessfeld, former Special Projects Officer of the World Future Council, and is managed by the World Future Council Peace and Disarmament Program in cooperation with Youth Fusion and the Basel Peace Office.
